M’s suite

M’s room was added on just for her, so it will have a more traditional feel to it — the bulk of the decor is her stuff. The bathroom is straight out of Better Homes and Gardens with a “beach cottage” look in white beadboard wainscot and sand-colored lino.

General

Outlets and switches should be at accessible levels (see this site for example). Transitions should be level.

Sitting Room

Hardwood floor, tv connection, at least one outlet wired to wall switch. No overhead light. Painted walls and trim.

Bedroom

Hardwood floor (continuous with sitting room). At least one outlet wired to wall switch for lighting. Ceiling fan (no light). Quad outlet (she’s got some equipment) on at least one side of the bed. Outlets arranged so bed can be placed on west or north wall. Painted walls and trim.

Accessible Bath

All the fixtures are on the north wall. There’s still 5′ to the south wall, room for a free-standing cabinet and bench. Bob will detail a second sink plumbing area on the south wall, in case M needs a wheelchair more permanently. Then she will have room next to the toilet for a wheelchair (and an assistant).

Toilet:

Toto Drake ADA Two Piece Toilet, 1.6 GPF: CST744SL Blocking in wall to attach cantilevered Grab bars (which will have to come from both sides).

Toto Toilet

Shower:

Low-threshold roll-in pan. Walls of acrylic/gel/fiberglass panels (white, or white with a little accent color). Curtain. Chrome rod. Built in seat, not too far from the shower control (most built-in kits have the seat way too far away for a frail old lady to reach the control) and enough grab bars. Handshower with single lever control.

Sink/Vanity:

I dunno. I’m pretty sure she wants a “standard” vanity. I’m thinking just a basic white/beadboard with integral marble top (much like you can get at HD or Lowes). If we get to the point of needing foot space, we can replace the vanity with a wall-mounted sink.

Faucet:

Single lever chrome faucet. Pop up drain.

Walls:

White Painted beadboard to 4.5(?) feet, then paint above.

Floors:

Sand-colored linoleum.

Lights:

Light over shower, on either side of sink mirror, and general light in the center. Some sort of independently switched night light (the cheapo plug-in LEDs are too dim), perhaps on the south wall or near the vent?

Ceiling:

White paint. Vent attached to HRV/ERV system.

Closet:

Floors:

Sand-colored lino. seamless with bath

Lights:

Fluorescent fixtures

Fixtures:

about 8′ of hanging rod at about 4′ (M’s shoulder height). Storage shelves above and drawers below. The highest shelves should be behind doors for longer-term storage. About 3 feet of rod at 6′ for longer things (coats, etc). Melamine + wire closet system is ok.

Other:

Paint the whole thing ceiling white.
