I usually wear T-shirts (plain cotton) and shorts (hand-sewn). For dress-up, I wear salwar kameez, which I sew for myself. Most comfortable clothing going.
I have two saris, which I bought because I sew and love fabric. One green silk, one a cotton Bengali tant with deep zari borders. I thought that I would never dare wear them. Who wants to see a fat woman’s bare stomach? But I have a cunning plan! I’ve ordered an inexpensive white cotton knit figure hugging dress (short sleeve, scoop neck, ankle length) from Dharma Trading Company and I’m going to wear THAT under the sari instead of the usual choli-petticoat combination.
I will report on the success of the experiment. I hope that it works, because I would love to see saris catch on as Western “dress-up,” much to the benefit of the struggling handweavers of India.
Bill, do you think your wife would like a sari? Great ones on sale at sarisafari.com Surprise her!
