The least open field, redux

Bill Ben­zon at the Valve asks about aca­d­e­mic pub­li­ca­tion and patient wait­ing, and it’s inter­est­ing to watch the com­ments threads con­sid­er­ing what an arXiv in the human­i­ties might be. And how it might play among the intel­li­gentsia over in that wing of the Acad­emy to talk about your work after it’s fin­ished, but before it’s pub­lished.

What­ever that means. Why is that not in ques­tion: the def­i­n­i­tion of “published”?
